Description

The Casa Matemática Oaxaca (CMO) will host the "Iwasawa Theory for GL(2) and Applications: Open Problems and New Directions" workshop in Oaxaca, from August 15 to August 20, 2021.

One remarkable development in algebraic number theory over the last two decades is the proof of many cases of the main conjecture of Iwasawa theory for elliptic curves over the rational, leading to spectacular advances on the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture. Over the past few years, the methods used to prove these results have been refined to remove some of their hypotheses and extended to other settings, but despite these improvements some important cases remain largely open.

This workshop aims to foster new developments in these directions by clarifying the state of the art of the aforementioned results, identifying some of the technical limitations of the current methods, and encouraging the exchange of ideas between participants with different areas of expertise, while also bringing new researchers (recent PhDs and post-docs) in the area up to speed on current methods and results.

The Casa Matemática Oaxaca (CMO) in Mexico, and the Banff International Research Station for Mathematical Innovation and Discovery (BIRS) in Banff, are collaborative Canada-US-Mexico ventures that provide an environment for creative interaction as well as the exchange of ideas, knowledge, and methods within the Mathematical Sciences, with related disciplines and with industry. The research station in Banff is supported by Canada's Natural Science and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF), Alberta's Advanced Education and Technology, and Mexico's Consejo Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnología (CONACYT). The research station in Oaxaca is funded by CONACYT
