Description

The Banff International Research Station will host the "Nikol'skii inequalities and their applications" workshop in Banff from December 3, 2017 to December 10, 2017.

Nikol'skii's inequalities have been playing crucial roles in polynomial approximation and embedding of function spaces.
The purpose of this project is to solve three specific problems concerning sharp Nikol'skii inequalities for spherical polynomials and their interaction with sparse spherical harmonic approximation. The aim is to improve our understanding of the high-dimensional Nikol'skii constant and to develop new techniques to attack greedy approximation with regard to spherical harmonics.

The Banff International Research Station for Mathematical Innovation and Discovery (BIRS) is a collaborative Canada-US-Mexico venture that provides an environment for creative interaction as well as the exchange of ideas, knowledge, and methods within the Mathematical Sciences, with related disciplines and with industry. The research station is located at The Banff Centre in Alberta and is supported by Canada's Natural Science and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF), Alberta's Advanced Education and Technology, and Mexico's Consejo Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnología (CONACYT).
