Description

The Banff International Research Station will host the "Whitney Problems (HALF)" workshop from April 21st to April 26th, 2013.

The problems that we would like to discuss are motivated by boundary value problems for partial differential equations and by classical trace and extension theorems characterizing traces of spaces of generalized smoothness (e.g., Sobolev, Besov, etc.) to smooth submanifolds of a Euclidean space. But in
many cases one needs similar results for subsets of a more complicated geometric structure (for instance, after the change of variables initial data may be situated on a nonsmooth surface). The subject is originated from Hassler Whitney seminal papers of 1934 which, in particular, deal with the following problem: given a real function on an arbitrary subset of a Euclidean space to determine whether it is extendible to a function of a prescribed smoothness on the whole of space? The workshop is focused on some the most vibrant developments in the area of Whitney problems.

The Banff International Research Station for Mathematical Innovation and Discovery (BIRS) is a collaborative Canada-US-Mexico venture that provides an environment for creative interaction as well as the exchange of ideas, knowledge, and methods within the Mathematical Sciences, with related disciplines and with industry. The research station is located at The Banff Centre in Alberta and is supported by Canada's Natural Science and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF), Alberta's Advanced Education and Technology, and Mexico's Consejo Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnología (CONACYT).
