Description

The Banff International Research Station will host the "Western Canada Linear Algebra Meeting" workshop from May 7th to May 9th, 2010.

Linear algebra has to do with the mathematics of arrays. Frequently rectangular or square arrays of numbers and often of very large size. They play important roles in many parts of mathematics and its applications. They frequently have certain characteristic properties which provide vital information about the source of the data in compact form. The treatment of such arrays and the extraction of the condensed information gives rise to a host of mathematical problems - which are the topic of this workshop.

The Banff International Research Station for Mathematical Innovation and Discovery (BIRS) is a collaborative Canada-US-Mexico venture that provides an environment for creative interaction as well as the exchange of ideas, knowledge, and methods within the Mathematical Sciences, with related disciplines and with industry. The research station is located at The Banff Centre in Alberta and is supported by Canada's Natural Science and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), the US National Science Foundation (NSF), Alberta's Advanced Education and Technology, and Mexico's Consejo Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnología (CONACYT).
